Historical Background for Martha’s Vineyard Photos

Oak Bluffs, on the northeastern shore of Martha’s Vineyard, is best known for its adorable neighborhood full of colorful gingerbread cottages—the inspiration behind my gallery, Martha’s Vineyard Photos. These tiny Victorian homes were originally built in the late 1800s on land that once hosted large Methodist camp meetings. Back then, families would come every summer, setting up tents to attend religious revival gatherings.

Things started to change in 1868, when the Camp Meeting Association was formed. Slowly, tents were replaced with charming little cottages, and the area took on a one-of-a-kind look. Each gingerbread cottage has its own personality, with fancy trim, steep rooflines, and spacious porches perfect for relaxing. Over the years, families kept coming back—some for the spiritual gatherings, others just for the fun and strong sense of community that grew around these homes. That special mix of history, color, and connection is what inspired me to create Martha’s Vineyard Photos.

Creative Background for Martha’s Vineyard Photos

During a three generation trip to Martha’s Vineyard (myself, my mother, and my daughter), I stumbled upon these adorable little homes in Oak Bluffs. The beauty and charm of these homes are what sparked the idea for my gallery, Martha’s Vineyard Photos. These colorful little cottages are full of personality—each one tells its own story through bright paint, quirky shapes, and all those amazing details that make you stop and stare. With their steep gables and gingerbread trim, these Victorian homes have a timeless charm that really speaks to me as both a photographer and an artist. What makes them so special is that no two are exactly the same. Each one has its own look and feel, as if it jumped out of the pages of a storybook.

What makes my work a little different from traditional photography is the painterly style I bring to each image. I don’t just take pictures—I blend photography with artistic techniques to turn these already charming homes into something even more magical for my gallery, Martha’s Vineyard Photos. This lets me bring out the textures, rich colors, and little details in both the cottages and their surroundings, adding depth and feeling that go beyond just documenting the scene.

As I put this collection together, I’ve taken some artistic liberties by carefully removing distracting elements from some of the images, allowing the observer to focus entirely on the unique beauty of each home. This way, each cottage can really shine—its vibrant colors, intricate trim, and storybook charm front and center. My hope is that when people look at these Martha’s Vineyard Photos, they feel the same sense of wonder and nostalgia that I felt while creating them, and get a little taste of the magic that makes Oak Bluffs so special.
